Sony Corp. Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer ousted Ryoji Chubachi as president and took control of the main electronics business as the maker of the PlayStation 3 and Bravia televisions faces a record loss.
Stringer, 67, will assume the expanded role from April 1, Tokyo-based Sony said today. Chubachi, 61, will become vice chairman in charge of product safety, quality and environmental issues.
The reassignment of Chubachi, a 32-year veteran at Sony, may help clear the way for Stringer to reorganize the company as the global recession erodes sales. Sony is cutting 16,000 workers and shutting plants to weather a slump that forced the world’s second-largest maker of consumer electronics to forecast a record 260 billion yen ($2.7 billion) full-year operating loss.
“The Japanese can’t take decisive actions toward their comrades during hardship,” said Yuuki Sakurai, general manager of financial and investment planning at Tokyo-based Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance Co., which manages $54 billion in assets. “As a non-Japanese without such loyalties, Stringer is better positioned to conduct the large-scale restructuring that Sony has to do.”
Sony rose 2 percent to close at 1,668 yen on the Tokyo Stock Exchange before the company’s announcement, while the Nikkei 225 Stock Average climbed 1.5 percent. The stock fell 69 percent in 2008, after gaining for four straight years.

कोइरालाको यो भनाई एकताका माओवादीले अवलम्बन गरेको रणनीति ‘ढाडमा टेकेर टाउकोमा हान्ने’ लाई व्यङ्ग्य गरे झैँ देखिन्छ। कोइरालाले यसो भन्नुको कारण पनि खुलाए।

Canon brings SX1 IS to US and adds RAW
Canon has launched the Powershot SX1 IS in the US market and has also announced a firmware update enabling RAW capture. Existing SX1 IS owners will also be able to download the Digital Photo Professional software to edit white balance, exposure compensation and sharpness of their RAW files before converting them to JPEG. The firmware will be available for download from mid-March 2009 while US users should be able to buy cameras from April at an MSRP of $599.

In optics, an aperture is a hole or an opening through which light is admitted. More specifically, the aperture of an optical system is the opening that determines the cone angle of a bundle of rays that come to a focus in the image plane. World Press Photo title goes to US
A black-and-white image depicting the impact of the US housing crisis has won the World Press Photo award for American photographer Anthony Suau. It beat more than 96,000 other entries. Suau scoops a 10,000 Euro cash prize and a Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera. The winning image shows an armed officer at the home of people who were evicted following a mortgage foreclosure in Cleveland, Ohio, last year. Officers were there to make sure that the house was clear of weapons and the residents had moved out. 'The strength of the picture is in its opposites,' said judging panel chair MaryAnne Golon. 'It's a double entendre. It looks like a classic conflict photograph, but it is simply the eviction of people from a house following foreclosure. 'Now war, in its classic sense, is coming into people's houses because they can't pay their mortgages.' Last year, British photographer Tim Hetherington landed the title with his image of a US soldier in Afghanistan.

Fujifilm introduces F200EXR with Super CCD EXR
Fujifilm has unveiled the FinePix F200EXR digital compact, incorporating its new 1/1.6” Super CCD EXR sensor. The camera is the first to use the company's EXR technology that can use the sensor in three different ways to optimize resolution, dynamic range or low-light performance. The F200EXR has a 3.0" LCD, 5x optical zoom, dual image stabilization and HD (stills) output. Photography is all about capturing light on a photographic emulsion or electronic sensor. And as such the lens and film or sensor, are the most important components affecting image quality. Essentially, the camera itself is just a light-tight box with a shutter!You've seen the wonderful pictures from the rovers sent by NASA to Mars. All detailed and colourful. You might think that they're from some huge megapixel space-age techno-beast and you'd be surprised to hear that the sensor is a paltry 1 megapixel. Bigger pixels mean less noise which is always a good thing, but where NASA put all its money was into a very high quality lens. The results show it was worth it!A camera that allows you to change the lens will obviously give you the greatest flexibility to pick the appropriate lens for the situation. An ideal camera like this is the SLR. You can choose from super wideangle to super telephoto. Macro for close ups. Bellows for even closer close up. Attach it to a microscope. Attach it to a telescope.

Although a lens can precisely focus at only one distance, the decrease in sharpness is gradual on either side of the focused distance, so that within the DOF, the unsharpness is imperceptible under normal viewing conditions.
For some images, such as landscapes, a large DOF may be appropriate, while for others, such as portraits, a small DOF may be more effective.

Except at close-up distances, DOF is approximately determined by the subject magnification and the lens f-number. For a given f-number, increasing the magnification, either by moving closer to the subject or using a lens of greater focal length, decreases the DOF; decreasing magnification increases DOF. For a given subject magnification, increasing the f-number (decreasing the aperture diameter) increases the DOF; decreasing f-number decreases DOF.
When focus is set to the hyperfocal distance, the DOF extends from half the hyperfocal distance to infinity, and is the largest DOF possible for a given f-number.
The advent of digital technology in photography has provided additional means of controlling the extent of image sharpness; some methods allow DOF that would be impossible with traditional techniques, and some allow the DOF to be determined after the image is made.
